Guided Reading Lesson Plans

Happy Monday!

I was working on my lesson plans for GR this week and finally decide to change the page I use up. I was using a page per group per day. It was getting a little ridiculous! SO i decided to squeeze it all into one nice little spread sheet. :) Make life more simple. I group my kiddos by "color" so I have blue, green, purple, yellow, orange, etc. group.

We began our Arctic Animal & Non Fiction unit today. The kids LOVE this unit and so do I!! Here are a few photos from anchor chart mania today!

on our way out today the kids had to tell me what "stuck" with them from penguins today =)
they're so smart! We will use the penguin to label the parts tomorrow.

we read a non fiction book and watched a few national geographic short videos on penguins and completed out Can/Have/Are anchor chart. They then did their own individual page that will go in their non fiction book. 

We started talking about NF text features today. We talked about the TOC - how it helps you and where to find it. 

Tomorrow we are going to focus on photographs and captions. Here are the anchor charts below.

100th Day of School

I cannot believe it's almost the 100th day!! Last year my kiddos did a poster project that they completed at home. We shared it and they hung in the hallway on display. I blew the file up on the copy machine to fit on the large sized construction paper. (poster size)

I will have this on my TpT this week for download. :) We do lots of different activities on the 100th day but this is our big project!

Ending letter sounds **freebie***

HELLO!

Happy Monday!! Well, I wont say it was happy... but it ended happy. Kickboxing + best friends + glass of wine + biggest loser... good ending to the day. OMG! Anyone else watching the biggest loser? Love it  and the focus on childhood obesity brings tears to my eyes because it is SUCH a problem! Gah, I think the show just does a wonderful thing for people and it is so inspiring. We do a lot in my class for National Heart Month and I think were really going to go the extra mile this year. :) I will keep you posted and share some of things we will be doing soon.

Before I went on my Biggest Loser tangent I wanted to hop on and write real quick and share something we are doing tomorrow morning for word work. We are shifting our focus in class from beginning sounds to ending sounds. (kind of nervous, well see how it goes) I made this page to go along with the lesson. Winter Unit

Sigh, moments like this I wish I could make clip art!!! I am in the middle of working on my winter unit and I have an activity in mind but cannot find the clip art I am looking for. Frustrating!!!

I can't believe that the break is over. I am so sad!! But on the bright side... only half a year left??? And I have a TON to do! sheesh! Thankfully tomorrow is a work day and I can get a lot done (fingers crossed!) I am going to have a "do not enter sign" on my door- I am awful at chatting away with my coworkers. eeek!

Anyway, this week we are focusing on winter. It's going to be a fun one! I am almost done with my winter unit so keep on the look out! =)

Sight Work Homework/Spelling & give away!

I can't believe break is almost over!! So sad but it will be an exciting and hopefully smoother second half of the year! This year is my first year to have a student observer and surprise!!! I have 2! I am excited/nervous... you know, the unknown is always a little nerve racking. :) I was blessed to have a WONDERFUL mentor teacher when I was student teaching and she inspired me to give back a little. Hopefully my girls love it!

Anyway, I do weekly homework with my kids and with this group being a little lower than my previous groups I decided to hold off on the spelling part of our homework and really focus in on beginning sounds and word work activities. Well, now that we are half way through (almost) I am going to give sight work/spelling a try!

In years past, I have used common sight words. Our districts adoption is word families but the words are so random-- nothing that are kiddos are going to use while reading. We, as a team, felt like our kiddos benefitted more from sight words. One thing i've always noticed though is the kids practice the words for a week and most of the ones that need to retain those words and use them, dont.... SO, I am trying something new this year.

I am hoping to spend 2 weeks on the same 10 words. So each list lasts 2 weeks. The first week we will focus on reading the words. The second week we will focus on writing the words. I am starting this next week so let's see how this goes!! You can download week 1 & 2 on my TpT store... please let me know what you think! Hopefully this works to tie in with you homework and help improve your kiddos reading and writing!

New Year & Currently....

 Happy New Year!! 2013 is going to be my year, I am so excited for all the things that are to come. :)

I think all of these are pretty self explanatory but I did want to share my OLW. I think 2013 is going to be full of a lot of changes for me. I am going to find a new school, and that new job may or may not require a move! I have been in Dallas my whole life and I am ready for something new and exciting, I am ready for a CHANGE. I also plan on continuing kick boxing and that will hopefully help CHANGE my bod! I am sure there will be some other changes in there! =-)
